dc.title | Stability analysis of braced barrel vaults | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | The braced barrel vault, with the advantages of reasonable and even distribution of forces, considerable span, easy erection, low construction cost, various changes of arrangement and aesthetical reasons, are of interest and concern to most architects and structural engineers. The concept of ultimate limit state design is currently gaining international acceptance and is extensively used in structural engineering. Such a trend in structural design emphasizes the importance of understanding the true characteristics of the ultimate behaviour and predicting accurately the instability of compression members and structures which consider the significant nonlinearities affecting the load carrying capacity. Therefore, the instability behaviour and structural response have to be studied by means of geometrically nonlinear analysis. This dissertation is to perform the parametric and comparative studies with the elastic critical buckling load factors, deflection modes and stress distributions on the braced barrel vaults by tracing the load deflection curve. And the stability analysis of three-way or triangulated braced barrel vaults in steel with different configurations, boundary conditions and loading patterns are to be under consideration. As a result, a clear qualitative understanding and design guidance for braced barrel vaults to avoid such instability will be concluded and consolidated. | en_US |
