Abstract: Medicine is one of the earliest field where expert systems were applied. There are many medical expert systems in different medical areas. In this dissertation, a brief glance on the components of an expert system is given and three medical expert systems (MYCIN, INTERNIST & ONCOCIN) are introduced as examples. Since there is no medical expert system on general clinical diagnosis, an 'Expert System for General Medical Diagnosis' (GMD) is developed. GMD can be used both at home or in a clinic. The benefits of using it are stated in later section. The knowledge base of GMD stores the medical knowledge of a family doctor and the rule of thumbs of clinical diagnosis. By making use of production rules, the questions for symptoms are linked together and stored in a database. It can diagnose more than 300 common diseases. User only needs to answer YES/NO and rate the severity to find out the possible diagnosis. The system can show the certainty of diagnosis by using 'certainty factor weighting'. It is an interactive and window base diagnostic medical expert system that runs on PC (PowerBuilder with FoxPro database). With GMD, you can decide when it is sensible to take a medicine bought over-the-counter, and when you need medical help right away. It is not to replace family doctor but to increase the general medical knowledge of the public so as to improve their health.
