dcterms.abstractSince 2003 all leading assembly and package equipment companies in the world are experiencing revenue decline and profit losses. Most of the companies re-organized their organizations and redesigned their business strategies in order to be profitable. This research focuses on a manufacturing company and simulates how the production planner and the engineer work together, using an agent-based system to develop a new scheduling method to help the production planning to become more flexible to adapt the customer's change requirements. A survey is used to investigate the manufacturing business environment and identify the trends. Then benchmarking is carried out to analyze the operations, production approaches and underlying philosophy of some famous agile manufacturing firms. A case study is conducted on a company, a new scheduling model is formulated and a pilot run is implemented. The pilot run results indicated that most of the production times regarding urgent orders reduced more than 30% by using the Agent-based System. It is also found that the original scheduling method can not fully cope with last-minute urgent design changes; late deliveries usually need to wait for machining on parts and they are hard to be predicting for the completion time. Furthermore, the communication between machine shop and planner is inefficient. After applying the negotiation method between the machine shop supervisor and the production engineer, they are able to communicate with each other more efficiently in support production planning and be able to share the workload. Agent-based process is a good system if it is used properly in an organization.en_US
