dcterms.abstractConcurrent design is a product development methodology which promotes the concept of design for manufacturing, life-cycle engineering, and product-process integration. Nowadays, concurrent design has gained wider acceptance in the industry. There is a belief that concurrent design aids in achieving product and process designs for higher quality, more manufacturable products in shorter lead times from design to manufacturing. This will be essential for a company to remain success in today's increasingly competitive marketplace. There are a number of approaches to concurrent design. In this project, the knowledge-based computer-aided design (CAD) approach is adopted in the development of a prototype concurrent design system for injection-molded plastic parts. The framework of the prototype system integrates a knowledge-based system, a feature-based CAD system and a database. The feature-based system is equipped with a feature library and a user interface which help the user to build complex plastic parts conveniently. The system also supports automatic design analysis so that corrections can be made earlier before the design finalized. The knowledge-based system comprises of two parts. The first one supports the material selection process in the initial design stage. The second one supports the manufacturing evaluation after the preliminary product design is available. The evaluation includes mold base selection, molding machine selection and the estimation of manufacturing cost for various process configurations. The knowledge is represented in a frame-based hierarchy, and the blackboard model of problem-solving is adopted to develop the knowledge-based system. A set of feasible solutions will be generated by the knowledge-based system for assessment.en_US
