|Taguchi design of experiment is a very useful tool for studying a process, identifying root causes of problems, and providing insight for continuing quality improvement possibilities. However, it is important to realize that for a design of experiments program to be effective, it must be an integrated part of an organization's TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT strategy. Taguchi Method is applied in the package of Discrete Semiconductor components. The parameter design is mainly concentrated in the assembly processes in the company ( i.e. Electronic Devices Ltd. ) . The optimum setting is found at which loss of quality is smallest. Taguchi Method has been implemented in Electronics Devices Ltd. ( EDL ) for more than four years. First part of this dissertation will reveal the status of the application of Taguchi method in the company EDL. A field survey using questionnaire is employed for this purpose. The survey is expected to reveal the benefits of Taguchi methods, the critical success factors of Taguchi method implementation, the effectiveness of training course on Taguchi method in the company and the generic methodology of the Taguchi method. The questionnaire was administered to the engineers and supervisors of different departments. The questionnaires survey revealed that the technical staff recognize the benefits of Taguchi method; top management is committed through action and participation, good leadership, strong planning, monitoring and controlling during the application of the Taguchi method; and the training course of Taguchi method in EDL is acceptable but could be further improved particularly in the content. The second part of this dissertation presents a generic methodology for Taguchi Design of Experiments - a powerful tool for continuous quality improvement. The aim of the methodology is to assist manufacturing companies to apply Taguchi Design of Experiments more systematically and efficiently in solving manufacturing process problems. It shows an approach step by step from problem identification to interpretation of results obtained from statistical analysis. The methodology focuses on a generic method of classifying manufacturing problems using Taguchi's three stage off-line quality system, and shows how it helps companies to tackle manufacturing process problems more efficiently. The resulting methodology will be embedded in a computer based system such as QUEST and STN software program that will help companies to make use of the current state of the art in Taguchi methods for quality improvement. In conclusion, Taguchi method has been used to improve the production management and to raise the productivity at EDL. Hence, we see that this research into the Taguchi method at EDL is very timely and meaningful to the company.
