Abstract: Web GIS is the combination of computer network technique and GIS, which provides a new mode of data integrating and sharing. Based on Internet network, some of all the resource could be integrated into a new application. Consequently the main Web GIS techniques based on network such as Web GIS Service, Grid GIS, Map API, Distributed Component and Distributed Database are discussed at the beginning of my dissertation. An important concept "enterprise application" is raised aiming at the current development status quo of "one GIS engine and one Server". The intention is to construct an enterprise application based on these techniques. Ajax is a multi-thread technique based on client side, which implements concurrent tasks of multi-objects to increase browsing speed and improve user's experience. Ajax technique makes a Web GIS application reduce the dependence on network by using browser cache and concurrent task mechanism. From the point of view Ajax is a enterprise-class technique with which Google Map constructs a Web GIS enterprise application: Google Map. The frameworks and solutions based on Ajax technique have also already mushroomed. Ajax might be seen as an efficient bind connecting client side and server side: it could acquire data which Web Service provides; it could obtain map tiles from a map server; it also is the most important part of Map API. Consequently in this dissertation Ajax technique including its concept, framework and application etc is discussed in detail. J2EE is a series of standards of enterprise solution based on Java, which provides a multi-tier distributed application model to construct a Web GIS application. The current Web GIS solution based on Java are all designed according to the J2EE four-tiers: the core is business logic tier to construct a Web GIS Service composed of many enterprise JavaBeans which provide data and images for server presentation tier by accessing GIS database (EIS). In this dissertation the concept and development modes of J2EE is discussed because all the tests are completed and developed based on an application based on J2EE multi-tier architecture. Finally a practical underground pipeline system based on B/S mode which is developed by author is discussed. The pipeline system is developed based J2EE four-tier architecture, the Web GIS component of Wuda Geoinformatics Company are employed. Ajax technique is used to acquire a map image from the server.
