|Title:||Expert systems : the threshold of improving effectiveness in building construction cost estimating||en_US|
|Abstract:||Construction cost estimating is the first and the most important professional service that quantity surveyors provide for their clients. The accuracy of the estimates is crucial to the feasibility of a building development. It requires knowledge and experience to prepare construction cost estimates. Therefore, a team of specially trained estimators is set up to take care of the task. However, due to high turn over rate of estimators, the system is not running efficiently. On the other hand, due to lack of practice, normal surveyors presumably are totally incapable to do cost estimates. It is believed that expert systems would offer great opportunities in tackling these problems. If knowledge and expertise for construction cost estimating can be captured and made use of at any time by any person, then there would be significant improvement in the quality of work in terms of accuracy and consistency. Estimators would be able to carry out their work more efficiently. Yet, the most important is that this may enable even normal surveyors to participate in the estimating task. A prototype which could deal with caisson construction cost estimating was developed to test the above hypothesis. A user evaluation was carried out and the feed-backs analyzed. The result had been quite encouraging. This report describes in detail how the prototype had been built and how the evaluation had been conducted and analyzed.||en_US|
