Computer studies on the effective dielectric constant of hard-sphere-filled composite materialsen_US
The effective dielectric constant of hard-sphere-filled composite material has been studied using computer simulation. The influence on the effective dielectric constant due to different configurations of the inclusions and different volume fractions were studied. It is presented as an electrical potential problem that some hard spherical dielectric inclusions with permittivity 庰1 are randomly embedded in a homogeneous, isotropic dielectric matrix with permittivity 庰2, and an electric field was applied externally to the composite material. The problem was solved numerically through a boundary element formulation. The simulated results were found to be in good agreement with several sets of experimental data. Furthermore, the clustering effects of the inclusions were studied. We found that clustering causes higher effective dielectric constant and its effect is more important at high inclusion volume fractions. The effect due to inclusion size was also studied and it was found that, for a given volume fraction, to have negligible effect on the effective dielectric constant. Finally, the effect due to dispersion of inclusion sizes was studied and it was found to cause only small increase in the effective dielectric constant of the composite material.en_US
