dc.title | Issues relating to the transfer of the R&D department to China : a case study of a Hong Kong electronic company | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | Since the implementation of the Open-door policy in the Peoples' Republic of China in 1978 and the migration of Hong Kong electronic manufacturers to the Pearl River Delta region in the past fifteen years, a substantial increase in the production capacity has been observed. Together with the intensifying international competitive environment of the electronics industry, they are becoming the driving forces for enhancing R&D capacities in Hong Kong electronic companies. In contrast, the high wages and shortage of engineers in Hong Kong has been one of the factors limiting such development. In coping with this constrain, many companies have started to setup or extend their R&D Department in their factory premises to make use of the abundant supply of PRC engineers. This project is to explore the conditions triggering and affecting such organization change. Issues and problems relating to such will also be reviewed with reference to a case study. In Chapter 1, The Outline of this project is described. In Chapter 2, the competitive environment of the Hong Kong Electronics Industry is introduced. The background of the company for the case study will be described in Chapter 3. In Chapter 4, the organization change is analyzed. The Change Arena suggested by Strabel *8 will be used for the analysis. The implementation process is described in Chapter 5. Issues and problems relating to the implementation of such organization change are discussed in Chapter 6. The future projection of this organization change will be discussed in Chapter 7. Finally, in the conclusion in Chapter 8, it is suggested that the trend for shifting the R&D Department to China will continue as the environmental factors and conditions continues to favour such move. It is also recommended that providing the on-the-job training to the PRC engineers in Hong Kong for a period of few months would be helpful for diffusing the Hong Kong company's culture to these engineers for their adaptation. The limitations of the study is also described in this Chapter. | en_US |
