dc.title | Development of a cost-effective laser scanning system on an existing CNC machining centre | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | Laser scanning technology can facilitate the product design process by both improving the quality of design and shortening the product development lead time. One of the major barriers to hinder manufacturing industry to utilize this technology is the high initial investment cost. This project aimed at providing a cost-effective three-axis laser scanning solution for the manufacturing industry by making use of their existing CNC three-axis milling equipment. Manufacturer can purchase the laser scanning head and the scanning software only for laser scanning application and use their existing CNC milling machine as positioning device to carry out laser scanning. Methods to attach the laser scanning head, which was developed by Kenny Chan during his working in HKPC, to a CNC milling machine were investigated so that a universal fixture was designed and developed. A mean to control the CNC milling machine from the laser scanning software was studied to control the movement of the CNC milling machine to carry out laser scanning. Generally a three-axis laser scanning system consists of (a) a laser scanning head, (b) a three-axis gantry system and, (c) a laser scanning software. Through this project, the cost of laser scanning system could be lowered substantially as the gantry system which costs about 50% of the complete laser scanning system cost, is not required if user has already installed a three-axis milling machine. Hence, the laser scanning head can be connected onto an existing CNC three-axis milling machine to carry out laser scanning in a cost-effective manner. For instance, laser scanner user can save HK$200k in purchasing the new laser scanning solution at a cost of HK$150k only, instead of the original one with a gantry system at a cost of HK$350k, i.e. 57% initial investment can be saved. In three-dimensional laser scanning, it is usually not possible to scan the entire geometric shape of an object in one scan due to the existence of undercut regions, where cannot be directly illuminated by the laser beam emitted by the scanner for geometric shape capturing. Though this problem can be solved by using four-axis or five-axis laser scanning equipments which allow multi-view scanning to avoid most of the undercut problems, the costs of such equipments are generally too expensive for small and medium sized company to afford. In this project, a cost-effective mean was investigated to solve the undercut-region scanning problem in traditional three-axis laser scanning system such that local manufacturers can have a cost-effective undercut-free laser scanning solution. | en_US |
