| Abstract: | This dissertation describes a software framework for the development of electronic commerce applications using software agent technology. Software agent technology has been applied to a wide range of application areas including electronic commerce. However, most of the current agent-based electronic commerce systems are confined to limited scope of electronic commerce functions with the majority working on brokering and negotiation. The framework is designed to make use of the capabilities of software agents for a comprehensive range of electronic commerce functions including brokerage, negotiation, contracting, payment, security and transaction processing. Moreover, owing to ever-increasing demand in electronic commerce application and rapid evolution of business model and requirements, the problem on productivity of electronic commerce system development become remarkable. The framework is developed as an attempt to resolve the productivity issue by providing reusable and extensible building blocks for agent-based electronic commerce system. Electronic commerce applications can be built on top of the framework with minimal effort. The framework is developed on the IBM Aglet software development kit which is a mobile agent enabling system using Java. A prototype for air line booking is also made using the library of components provided by the framework. The framework is shown both applicable and effective in the development of agent-based electronic commerce applications. |
