The role of foreign banks in the PRC financial reformsen_US
Since the economic reforms began in 1979, a lot of foreign financial institutions have been introduced to China. Among the various kinds of financial institutions, foreign banks are the most active and appear to have played a more important role in the People's Republic of China's (PRC) financial reforms. This study aims at identifying the role of foreign banks in the PRC financial reforms as perceived by foreign bankers. It will be shown that foreign banks have played limited role in the PRC financial reforms in terms of increasing competitiveness and enhancing the structure of the PRC banking system. They do not have different views significantly irrespective of country of origin and institutional forms. Hong Kong is now a Special Administrative Region of the PRC. The influence of the Mainland China factor over the economy of Hong Kong is gaining more weight than before. Moreover, Hong Kong has also been a gateway for the foreign banks to enter into the PRC. The study on the development of foreign banks in the PRC has implications for Hong Kong to sustain its role as one of the biggest financial centres in the world.en_US
