dcterms.abstractMethane and carbon dioxide are all greenhouse gases (GHG), which will contribute to global warming when they are allowed to escape into the atmosphere. The digestion biogas has rather high energy content as more than half of its composition is methane, which is also regarded as a kind of renewable energy resources. If this renewable energy resource is effectively used in a STW, large amount of conventional energy resource can be saved and further reduction of GHG emissions can be achieved. One of the efficient ways to utilize the biogas produced in the sludge digestion process is to generate electricity by burning digestion biogas first and then to heat the sludge digestion tank by using the waste heat produced in the electricity generation process, i.e. cogeneration by using biogas as fuel. In this mode of biogas utilization, the high-grade thermal energy produced by burning the biogas is used for electricity (high-quality energy) generation and the low-grade thermal energy is used for heating the sludge digestion tank (low-quality energy). Therefore, cogeneration is a more reasonable utilization way of biogas from the viewpoint of thermodynamics. The innovative and more efficient way of digestion biogas utilization should be developed to improve the energy utilization This dissertation is actually a case study. After calculations, the cogeneration is simulated if it is applicable in the Shek Wu Hui and other sewage treatment works.en_US
