dc.title | The relationship between motor skills and school performance in children aged 6-12 in Hong Kong | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | This study aimed to examine the relationship between motor skills and school performance in children aged 6-12 in Hong Kong. The sample comprised of 31 girls and 42 boys. Motor proficiency was assessed using the Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC). The School Function Assessment (SFA), completed by teachers who were familiar with the students' functioning in the school setting, was used to evaluate the child's functioning at school. The Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire (DCD-Q), a questionnaire to be filled in by parents at home, was used as an instrument to investigate on parental perception of the child's motor skill. Statistical methods used in this study were the Spearman's correlation coefficient, Kruskal-Wallis test and Post-hoc Mann-Whitney U test. The results revealed that neither the school function of a child as perceived by school teacher nor the parental perception on the child's motor ability was statistically related to the child's motor proficiency. Instead, this study identified a proportion of subjects having certain degrees of motor problems. Further studies with a larger sample should thus be considered to examine the prevalence of motor problems among local school-aged children, and its relationship to participation in school. | en_US |
