Abstract: Distinct Element Method is a discontinuum modeling approach for simulating the behaviour of jointed media subjected to quasi-static or dynamic conditions. UDEC (Universal Distinct Element Code) is a two-dimensional version of Distinct Element Method which is one form of Discrete Element Method. Discrete Element Method is ideal in solving both discontinuum and continuum problem. It is capable of analysing multiple interacting rigid or deformable, continuous, discontinuous or fracturing bodies which undergo large displacements and rotations. Discrete Element Method can model both stable blocks or unstable blocks and can provide a history of physical parameter change (e.g. displacement and stress) because of its explicit formulation. Many researches have been carried out to investigate its application in different engineering disciplines and many computer codes have been developed for this method. This dissertation is to study the feasibility for application of Discrete Element Method in geotechnical engineering through literature review, illustrated examples and some discussions. Moreover study on the rock slope stability problem, bearing capacity problem, lateral pressure problem, tunnel excavation problem and groundfall simulation by UDEC has been carried out to validate applicability of Discrete Element Method in geotechnical engineering. With due consideration of its limitations and assumptions, UDEC generates the results which are comparable with the results from the analytical method or the well-established theory.
