Language and culture : an evaluation of the cultural impact on the spoken discourse of the attendees in a technical workshopen_US
The purpose of this study is to investigate the cultural impact on the use and the interpretation of the spoken discourse. The presentations given by four attendees from Korea and four attendees from Philippines in a technical workshop are evaluated. The spoken discourse was analysed in terms of the characteristics of the linguistic features as well as the cross-cultural verbal communication style. Six video clips were then extracted from the data and shown to a group of sixteen respondents from Hong Kong, two respondents from Korea, and one from the Philippines. Hofstede's cultural value dimensions were adopted to interpret the findings. Results show that there are significant cultural differences in the spoken discourse used in the presentations and perceived by the respondents.en_US
