| dcterms.abstract | Background: There have been increasing suggestions that patient involvement in improving hand hygiene can increase compliance among health care professionals. However, there are aspects of Chinese culture that may have an influence on patient involvement in this issue, and thus implementation of such policy. Aim: The aim of this study is to identify factors that affect Chinese patient participation in asking nurses to wash their hands. This study intends to explore Hong Kong people's (whose attitudes are influenced by the East and West) perceptions toward patient empowerment for improved hand hygiene compliance. Research question: What factors influence Hong Kong Chinese patients' participation in asking nurses to wash their hands? Design: This is a phenomenological design of Strauss' grounded theory; data were collected through in-depth interviews between February to March, 2009. Interviews were conduct in Cantonese and an interview schedule along with probing questions and subsequent strategies were included. Sample: The best informants with 14 patients from surgical wards at a local hospital. Results: Factors such as, passive-dependence on nurses, fear of health care professionals, previous experience of rebuke, fear of bad consequences, perceived risk, personal ability, and value of hand washing are important in determining the willingness of patients to speak out. A conceptual model is used to illustrate the relationships between each of these factors. Conclusion: The findings provide an insight into what Chinese patients feel about participating in hand hygiene promotion. In addition, knowledge generated from this study help infection control personnel and hospital administers to decide whether patient participation in hand hygiene promotion can be carried out in Hong Kong. | en_US |
