dc.title | A prospective study of the incidence and risk factors of hamstrings muscle injuries among sprinters | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | Hamstrings muscle injuries are common among athletes. The causes of injury are multifactoiral but the mechanisms for this remain uncertain. The purpose of this prospective study is to investigate the incidence rate and to examine the possible risk factors associated with hamstrings injuries in athletes during an athletic season. Forty-four athletes (35 males:9 females; 19.2 +- 2.0 years of age) were recruited in the study. Preseason assessment of hamstrings and quadriceps peak torque and optimum angle using isokinetic dynaomometry, flexibility of hamstrings muscle, demographic data, training history and previous injuries were obtained. The athletes were followed prospectively for an athletic season and they were asked to report all injuries resulting from sports A total of 8 (18.2%) of the 44 athletes sustained a hamstring injury. No significant difference was found between the injured and the non-injured athletes on demographic characteristics, isokinetic and flexibility measurements. Cox regression analysis revealed that athletes with a decrease in the conventional hamstrings to quadriceps ratio at angular velocity of 180 o/second are at greater risk of hamstrings injuries. A ratio of less than 0.6 was found to increase hamstrings injury by 14 times. Based on our findings, it is suggested that a reduced ratio of haiustrings:quadriceps at higher velocity is associated with hamstrings injuries. | en_US |
