Assessment of electrical and environmental effects of an extra high voltage (EHV) substation/circuit in Hong Kongen_US
In parallel with the increase in electricity demand, the aspirations of the general public for a clean and healthy environment are also growing. In recent years environmental effects due to the transmission networks/equipment, especially on overhead lines have been drawing increasing attention. The general public is concerned about the possible health effects from low frequency electromagnetic fields, several extensive reports on the subject and detailed review have been conducted by different independent organizations. In 1990, the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) produced interim guidelines covering limits of exposure to power frequency electromagnetic fields, these guidelines were recommended for adoption by the Hong Kong Government and the two local power companies have accepted the recommendation. This report discusses the environmental assessment of an EHV electrical substation and its associated equipment/circuits. Focus places on the production of electromagnetic fields underneath EHV transmission lines and their effects. It also summarizes the measurements carried out in the transmission and distribution system of China Light & Power with respect to such fields and compares them with the IRPA interim guidelines and also results obtained from other studies. The measurements are further verified and compared against theoretical predications.en_US
