dcterms.abstract | Shing Mun River and it's tributaries were heavily polluted by unauthorized industrial and domestic discharges before 1987. With the implementation of Water Pollution Control Ordinances by the local environmental authority in 1987, there has been general improvement in the water quality which was reflected by the Water Quality Index (WQI). However, monitoring data revealed that the concentrations of heavy metals remained high over the years. In this study, sediment samples were collected at eight strategic locations along the river system. The samples were digested and analyzed for Al, Cd, Cr, Cu , Pb and Zn. Results indicated that the sediments of the river system, which acted as a sink for heavy metals during the decade before 1987, has turned into a source of heavy metals to the overlying water. Release of heavy metals by the sediment rendered the WQI in terms of heavy metals to remain poor even after a decade of effort to eliminate illegal discharges. Sediment rehabilitation by dredging may be required as a remedial option. | en_US |
