Emission characterization of office equipmenten_US
This paper aimed at to measure the indoor air pollutants source characterization generated from some commonly used office equipment. The concerned office equipment was photocopiers, laser jet printers, inkjet printers, computer terminals and air cleaners with ozone generator. A literature review was conducted to collect the information of the indoor air quality (IAQ) emission from the office equipment including the background of indoor air quality, common control measures, common air pollutants from office equipment and operating mechanisms of these equipment. There was much office equipment that contributed to a poor IAQ. The health impact from this poor IAQ environment was also emphasized. A simplified measuring chamber was developed based on ASTM Standard D5116-90. Challenges and complications such as ventilation, pressure and material selection, etc. were encountered in developing and implementing this simplified testing facility. The concentrations of the pollutants from the common office equipment were measured with this simplified measuring chamber. The pollutant emission rates from this equipment were then calculated based on the equation developed by USEPA. The ozone emission rates of the tested laser jet printers varied similarly. The ozone emission rates of the laser printers were not directly related to the power dissipated. It was suspected that the increasing pollutant effect from power consumption was counteracted by the effect of the printing duration. Apart from that, the air cleaner with ozone generator had contributed an extremely high concentration of ozone. Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC) emission was varied among different brands and models from 2ppm to 35ppm. TVOC emissions of the inkjet printers printing different image were also studied. It was noted that the peak TVOC concentrations and TVOC emission rates were slightly higher while printing the same sized simpler diagram. No direct relationship can be drawn on the particulate emission while comparing among different office equipment and operating under different conditions. The IAQ Simulator for Personal Computer (IAQPC) was employed to set up a model for a simplified office environment. This model was analyzed to simulate different scenarios. It was evaluated that the ventilation cannot mitigate IAQ problems if there was a strong pollutant source such as air cleaner with ozone generator. The pros and cons of this type air cleaner were also discussed. Extra care should be paid in using this type of air cleaner. At last, recommendations were made for the following aspects, in order to achieve a better indoor environment: - Review of the use of ozone generating from air cleaner; - Alternative IAQ control measures; - Further research works; and - IAQ management.en_US
