Image data compression for a multimedia systemen_US
Multimedia computer applications require compression and decompression of image data. The JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) has defined the first international standard for compression and decompression of continuous-tone still images. Today, high speed JPEG compatible compression and decompression hardwares are usually built with hardwired processing elements, which are not flexible and prone to obsoleteness if new standards emerge. Another approach of using latest DSP (Digital Signal Processors) to implement JPEG hardware is discussed in this dessertation. The largest benefit of using DSP is to preserve hardware investment by just having the need to upgrade program codes only when new standards emerge. In this project, a Local CPU Bus DSPB (Digital Signal Processing Board) which having 33MFLOPs processing speed and effective data transfer rate of 45MB per second has been developed according to the JPEG Baseline Method. An introduction to image data compression and a breif description of the JPEG Baseline Mode of Operation are provided. The latest VL-BUS (VESA CPU Local Bus) technology for Personal Computer which used by the DSPB to direct interface with the 486 Host CPU is discussed. Softwares for JPEG Baseline method of compression and decompression have been developed, an intelligent Host Loader program has also been developed which can be used to download direct output codes of the DSP's Optimized C-compiler to the DSPB for execution. Compression and decompression performance, accuracy of the DSPB are investigated and discussed.en_US
