| dcterms.abstract | Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) occurs in up to 90% of patient at some point in the dementia illness (Herrmann and Black, 2000). It is the most common reason for psychiatric referrals, treatment with psychotropic drugs and institutionalizations. It also the main causes of substantial caregiver stress, excess disability and diminishing quality-of-life for both the caregiver and the person with dementia. The non-pharmacological interventions should be considered as first-line in dealing with BPSD (IPA, 1998) and caring process such as the individualized activities programmes offer the greatest prospect for therapeutic success (Burns, 1999). In this study, it aimed to develop a guided care protocol to manage the BPSD and carry out a pilot evaluation of a dementia care protocol within the care facilities to evaluate its effectiveness to enhances the competencies of formal carers to care the of patients with (BPSD) within the care facilities; and to improve the BPSD and well-being of persons with dementia. This is a randomised controlled trial of a dementia care protocol conducted in the 20 care facilities receiving the outreaching service of Psychogeriatric teams. The staff, independently of the researchers, selected five residents in each home so that the intervention was focused on those residents' behaviour that were difficult to care. The specialist psychogeriatric nurses provided care protocol as the educational materials; consultation visits to facilitate and monitor the application and the intervention in the first month and the follow up assessment provided within one month. The main outcomes were positive in improvement of BPSD and the well-being of the patients and decreased the level distress of the caregivers. A guided care protocol could help to identify the core information; skills requirements of dementia carers to implement evidenced based individualized care. However, further explorations to address the limitations; long-term effect; cost-effective means of make plans for, and delivering community oriented service model are required. | en_US |
