dcterms.abstractReclamation has been undertaken in Hong Kong to provide infrastructure development in the past decades. In the Reclamation design, quick estimations of the compressibility parameters and settlement in the marine mud are beneficial in saving time and costs. This dissertation presents a study of the consolidation behaviour and correlations between the compressibility parameters and the soil characteristics such as index properties for the marine clay in Hong Kong based on the laboratory test results and field observations. Based on the results of one-dimensional consolidatioon tests conducted on about 300 samples from 96 boreholes, correlations between the compressibility parameters and soil characteristics such as index properties are evolved. Some of the relationships investigated are found to be in agreement with similar relationships published in the literature while some are found to underestimate the compressibility parameters of the marine clay in Hong Kong. In these cases, new empirical relationships are proposed by the author to suit the nature and properties of the marine clay in Hong Kong. Moreover, it also establishes, as a pilot study, simple tools to predict the settlement by the back analysis of the monitoring results of site Tseung Kwan O. The performance and efficiency of the prefabricated band drains installed at captioned sites is examined. They are found to be well performed and efficient such that the degree of consolidation with drains is 3.5 to 4.5 times than that without drains at the same time of measurements.en_US
