| Abstract: | The purpose of this study is to carry out an analysis on persuasive communication to influence voter's decisions in an election environment. It intends to identify the elements to formulate an effective persuasive communication application. The research is based on the promotional materials used by the respective candidates in the Engineering Functional Constituencies during the second Legislation Council (LegCo) election of the Hong Kong Special Administration Region in 2000. Literature research was carried out to review the methods adopted for persuasive communication. Two focus groups were set up and their views on perceiving these materials were sought. The content of political persuasion is complex and how to make use of the candidate's attractiveness and outstanding characteristics is therefore important. These involve the possible application of impression management and demonstration of leadership competence to gain the voters' confidence for supports. The study also confirms these findings. A qualitative analysis was also carried out in order to identify possible winning guidelines for future election. |
