Attitudes to English pronunciation learning in a self-access context at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technologyen_US
This study describes why it was felt necessary to provide a programme of structured guidance for learners interested in improving their English pronunciation in an SAC context. It shows that although learners are interested in improving their pronunciation, they know little about the facilities and materials available to them in the SAC at HKUST and consider pronunciation to be one of the hardest skills to learn within an SAC context. The study relates that the learning of pronunciation is a popular option amongst post graduate students; shows what their attitudes, needs and expectations were regarding the learning of pronunciation in an SAC context; how the researcher implemented a programme of structured guidance for the subjects; and what the subjects' attitudes, needs and expectations were regarding the learning of pronunciation within an SAC context after having participated in the SAC English Pronunciation Programme. Results of the study show changes in attitudes. The study concludes that the programme was a success and argues that without the provision of structured guidance, learners tend to think that it is not possible to learn pronunciation autonomously.en_US
