Abstract: This dissertation describes the development of a fault diagnosis system for power system operation with rule-based expert system. The present situation and industrial trends of application of fault diagnosis system for power system is first outlined. This is followed by a literature review of expert system which includes the history, structure, search methods, control strategies and verification and validation methodologies. A detailed discussion of the methodologies and approaches in the implementation of present industrial fault diagnosis systems is manifested. The system design of this fault diagnosis system is then presented with the practical consideration of integration of this system with the alarm processing system and existing EMS system, the modelling of power system network from exisitng EMS system database, the acquisition of rules from power system protection schemes, the processing speed and diagnostic requirement and the practical issues on the maintainability. Afterwards, a detailed discussion on the practical implementation of the system which is followed by verification and testing of the system with genuine fault cases. At last, a conclusion and a discussion on the future development of this fault diagnosis system is presented.
