Measuring user satisfaction of an energy management system in a power utilityen_US
It is generally accepted that user satisfaction is a critical component in the successfulness of a computer system. Thus, measuring user satisfaction of computer systems is the interest of many computer professionals. Much work has been done on the development of a measuring tool. However, all the previous work was based either on the traditional data processing environment or the more recent end-user computing environment. No published work is found on measuring user satisfaction of Energy Management Systems in power utilities. An Energy Management System in a power utility has distinct characteristics that are different from other computing systems. Such a real-time control system is required to operate 24 hours a day and 365 days a year continuously. It retrieves real-time data from remote locations and presents them to the users in the control centre, enabling them to monitor the entire electricity power network with the most updated information. It also monitors the output of generating plants and sends out commands to control them continuously, ensuring electricity demand is met in the most economical way. The users of the Energy Management System are Control Engineers who work on shifts and monitor the conditions of the electricity power network via graphic interfaces. Since it is not possible for Control Engineers to carry out their duties without the system, the Energy Management System becomes an indispensable tool in maintaining electricity supply to a territory. Thus, elements contributing to user satisfaction are quite different from those of other types of computer systems. It is therefore inappropriate to use the user satisfaction measuring tools developed by previous works. This paper proposes a user satisfaction model for Energy Management Systems used by power utilities. The model was tested by surveying Control Engineers in the System Control Centre of China Light and Power Company Limited.en_US
