dc.title | Vendor evaluation and certification system : a re-engineering perspective | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | Nowadays, there are three great challenges facing all apparel makers, increased competition, changing consumer behavior and rapidly changing technology. Hong Kong's apparel industry is no exception to this global dimension. Many companies have reinvented their business strategies towards "Partnership" to maintain their competitive edge through harnessing vendor evaluation and certification system. The traditional way of "dictatorial approach to suppliers" is no longer applicable in the real market situation. The author is using a re-engineering perspective in viewing the buyer-supplier relationship. The "Partnership" requires treating the supplier on a continuing long-term basis, partnership requiring much closer and more open and frequent communication. Quality is the prime element in the success of Vendor Certification System. The purpose of this study is to examine the changes in the supply chain management under the interactive model. An American buying office, located in Hong Kong anonymous as "LC" Company, was selected for the study. The company launched the vendor certification system in 1995 which is recognized the performance at or above expected quality, cost, delivery and service levels. The company does the business only with her partners certified under her system. The research is to analyze how successful this system is to re-position and liaison of the new buyer-supplier relationship. There were interviews conducted to the key suppliers working with LC company. The respondents were asked a series of questions about the LC's Certification system and the success in achieving the purposes behind. The research revealed the following weaknesses, inadequate preparation work in the early stage, in a comprehensiveness of data, immature evaluation skill and techniques, and irrespective to the countries' culture. There are also strengths identified such as a data base and benchmarking for practitioners. The results indicated the LC's Certification system has met the goals and expectations of the respondents, the opportunities are not one-sided. Conclusively, recommendations and a new model is formulated with the interaction model as the base and foundation. The results can help other companies in a step-by-step process to emulate which would speed the development process and review the supply chain management as a starting point in promoting the growth and extension of valuable "partnership" relationships. | en_US |
