dc.title | Management skills for professional with special reference to a building services engineering consultancy firm | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | Building Services Engineers are considered as professionals specialising in technical aspect. They have almost all been educated, trained and developed in professional knowledge and skills for several years. They are usually referred to "technocrats" and their competence on administration and management aspects are generally considered to be insufficient. Their responsibilities require technical skills, administrative skills and interpersonal skills. Are their managerial skills competent for effective performance? Are they aware of the needs of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), as required by some professional institutes? The objectives of this project are mainly to identify the management skills which are essential for professionals in building services consultancy firms. With special reference to the building services engineering branch of an architectural and engineering firm, the competency levels of the senior engineer, project engineers and engineers in terms of managerial skills are assessed by mean of Batley's Management Skill Assessment Form. Apart from the identification of important managerial skills within the working group, the results suggested the training needs for managerial skill within the group of engineers and concluded the Company's Managerial Skill Development Model. After analysing the returned questionnaires, the competency levels of the building serceves engineers are identified. Self-development for the engineers is suggested with consideration of on-the-job development activities and off-the-job training programmes. Relevant training programmes and short courses are recommended after researching the literature available on further education in management for engineers. Responsibilities for the company training and responsibilities for professional institutes are also discussed, aiming at identifying the need of continuing professional development of building services engineers themselves. | en_US |
