dcterms.abstract | Firms in transition economies are contested living entities in which both command-based institutional settings and market-based institutional settings strive to influence their strategies and performance. These firms have to react to both sets of institutional forces embedded in such a hybrid system by formulating market-based strategies and command-based strategies simultaneously. This work proposes an organizing framework on enterprise performance and its antecedents, market-based strategies and command-based strategies, in a hybrid institutional setting in answer to the following research questions: (1) How should enterprise performance be conceptualized and measured in a transition economy, where contending institutional logics are in place? (2) What kind of strategies do enterprises adopt in order to secure superior performance as conceptualized under alternative institutional logics? And (3) To what extent do the set of strategies adopted under one institutional logic contribute to or detract from performance as construed in another? Resource dependence theory and institutional theory are integrated into the conceptual framework of this study. This work pools archival data and first-hand survey questionnaires from multiple sources in the Chinese pharmaceutical industry to address the above questions. | en_US |
