dcterms.abstractDebates between sustainable development and the tourism industry draw lots of concerns in the modern societies. People in both developing and developed countries prefer to pursuit better natural environment in their vacation destinations. Thus, ecotourism rapidly becomes the directional development goal in many places. This report focuses on investigating both the potentials resources and threatens in Sai Kung, Hong Kong, in order to investigate and study three main objectives: first, to better understand the term of “sustainable tourism”; second, to evaluate how the existing ecotourism contributing to sustainable development in Sai Kung, Hong Kong; and third, to investigate the challenges and potentials in sustainable tourism in Sai Kung in the future. There are no beach resorts or hotel business that contributing into commercial tourism in Sai Kung regions and its surrounding islands comparing with other vacation destinations such as the Mainland China or other Southeast Asia countries; however, the natural environment gives unique and preferable conditions for developing hiking, water sports, fishing and local tours. Nevertheless, future threatens are still visible due to the increasing values of land in Sai Kung. This paper courageously recommended a liberal/ existence development thinking, explains economy development can be accepted in terms of maximizing the social and environmental achievements simultaneously; also suggests local government should take efforts in protecting the natural environment and balance the roles of economy, society and the environment in the future.en_US
