| dcterms.abstract | Studies have shown that rearing and taking care of children with mental handicap is associated with burden and stress. This study focuses not only on characteristics of mental handicapped children, but also on social support and self-efficacy variables of caregivers, as potential predictors of parental burden. This is a quantitative cross-sectional study aiming at predicting the parental burden of caregivers of severe mentally handicapped (SMH) students who studied in SMH schools in Hong Kong. A total of seventy-one caregivers were recruited and completed a questionnaire through telephone interview. A Chinese version of questionnaire was designed to collect the information of demographic data of caregivers and care receivers, level of parental burden, self-efficacy of caregivers, and social support of caregivers. Results show that caregivers of SMH students at school age expressed a moderate level of parental burden on caring their children. A stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated that self-efficacy, home income, family support and walking ability of SMH children were found to be significant predictors of overall burden. Self-efficacy of caregivers possessed the strongest contribution (β=-.31; p= .003). Moreover, self-efficacy, home income, and walking ability of SMH children were found to be significant predictors of personal burden. Home income possessed the strongest contribution (β=-.286; p= .01). Besides, self-efficacy, family support and walking ability of SMH children were found to be significant predictors of role burden. Walking ability of SMH children showed the strongest correlation (β=-.373; p= .001). Self-efficacy development program, social support group, increasing financial assistance and manual lifting teaching program are recommended to caregivers of SMH children to relieve their parental burden. | en_US |
