dc.title | Design and testing of the bearing capacity of driven pile in Hong Kong | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | The objectives of the dissertation are to review and improve the current practice of design and testing of driven piles in Hong Kong. Piling data from a typical project of the Hong Kong Housing Authority (HKHA) are used for evaluation and comparison of the various methods of estimating the ultimate bearing capacity of driven piles. The dissertation includes a brief description of the general practice of piling works in Hong Kong with particular reference to the HKHA's projects. The dissertation also gives a brief account of the ground investigation and piling data collected from the HKHA's Tin Shui Wai Area 13 Phase 1 Project for the case study. The case study evaluates the Davisson's, Brinch Hansen's and Chin's Methods of interpreting the ultimate bearing capacities from the static load test results. The Davisson's Method is more appropriate for the large displacement driven piles in the general Hong Kong conditions. However, further study is needed for the small displacement driven piles. | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | The case study compares the ultimate bearing capacities by the static formulae with the static load test results. The Tomlinson's Method and the Poulos & Davis's Method have greatly under-estimated the ultimate bearing capacities. The Fleming et al Method gives more reasonable ultimate bearing capacities, though they are still quite conservative. Thus, the Fleming et al Method appears to be more appropriate for use in the general Hong Kong conditions. However, more research is necessary as to which static formula is more appropriate for use in Hong Kong. The case study then compares the ultimate bearing capacities by the Hiley Formula with the static load test results. The correlation is good. The case study also compares the ultimate bearing capacities by the CASE / CAPWAP Methods with the static load test results. These two methods give conservative ultimate bearing capacities. Lastly, the CASE / CAPWAP results are compared with that by the Simplified Hiley Formula. The correlation is good and most results are within ±25%. With these findings, a method is devised for selecting piles for static load tests and for statistical analysis of the pile bearing capacities. | en_US |
