dcterms.abstract | The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of moderate intensity exercise on physical health including body mass index, body mass composition and cardiovascular endurance in children with Cerebral Palsy (CP). It is a nonrandomized single group, pre and post-treatment design. A total of 10 children with CP (2 boys and 8 girls) aged 6-12 years old (mean=9.8 years; SD=± 1.6 years) received 40-minute exercise training including warm up, 20-minute moderate intensity exercise and cool down at a frequency of 3 sessions per week for 12 weeks. The 20-minute exercise training consisted of treadmill walking/running at moderate intensity, that is, with the target heart rate (THR) set at 60%-70% of the child's predicted maximum heart rate (MHR). The outcome measures used were body mass index (BMI), body mass composition (soft lean mass (SLM), body fat mass (BFM), percent body fat (PBF)), resting heart rate (RHR), resting blood pressure (RBP) and 6-minute walk distance (6MWD). After 12 weeks training, a significant decreased in the diastolic blood pressure (DBP) was noted, suggesting that the moderate intensity exercise training could possibly improve cardiovascular endurance in children with CP. There were no significant differences between the pre and post-training on SLM, RHR, SBP and 6MWD. It is possible that a higher physical training intensity is required to induce effects on body fat distribution. The effect of exercise on the body mass composition with exercise and diet would need further investigation. | en_US |
