dcterms.abstractThis dissertation presents the findings of an investigation into the effects of external obstructions on the daylight availability through an evaluation of the Vertical Daylight Factor (VDF) and the relative magnitude of the reflected components in terms of the percentage of reflected contribution in dense urban environments. The objectives of this study are to determine the percentage of reflected contribution under the different sky conditions and obstruction environments, and to investigate the relationship between the surface reflectance and the percentage of reflected contribution. The data were obtained by means of the physical models in real sky measurements and the computer simulation, Desktop Radiance 2.0 Beta. In general, the findings show that the major factors affecting the values of VDF and the percentage of reflected contribution are the reflectance, width and height of the measurement surface and obstruction surface, horizontal distance, measurement positions, sky conditions and sun positions. Moreover, a comparison between the simulation results and those of previous research work, and a comparison between the simulation results of VDF and current Building Regulation in Hong Kong have been conducted in this study.en_US
