| dcterms.abstract | Information Technology (IT) has become one of the major components in contemporary society. The present hospitality and tourism industries are largely relying on the applications of IT for the daily operation of their businesses. This study selected six leading research journals in hospitality and tourism, including Annals of Tourism Research, Journal of Travel Research, Tourism Management, International Journal of Hospitality Management, Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly, and Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research, as a database to analyze the trend of IT research publications in these fields. These six research journals have published a total of 3,941 full-length research papers during the period from 1984 to 2003. Excluding book reviews, research notes, editors' comments, readers' comments, and case studies, 176 entries of IT-related full-length papers were found. | en_US |
| dcterms.abstract | This study has categorized the IT publications into six categories: networking, information management, intelligence application, user interface, general business application (GBA), and miscellaneous. This study reveals that during the entire studies period (1984-2003), GBA was the most popular category, while networking had the highest growth rate in 1994-2003. As the number of research papers had increased from 1,756 in the first studied decade (1984-1993) to 2,185 in the second studied decade (1994-2003), the number of IT research papers remained unchanged in both decades, during which 88 papers were published in each decade. While the United States and the United Kingdom had contributed to more than 80% of all IT research papers during both decades, the Asia Pacific region had a 3-fold increase in the second decade. Lastly, as the complexity, difficulties, and comprehensiveness of research categories were intensified, the trend of multiple-authorship had become a common practice. | en_US |
