The physical and psychological effects of external breast prosthesis in women with mastectomyen_US
Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the leading cause of deaths among women worldwide. The incidence rate increases rapidly in Hong Kong over the last two decades. The most common treatment of breast cancer is extensive extirpation of the breast. The loss of breast after breast surgery has significant affected both physical and psychological aspects. However, research dealing with body balance and using of external breast prosthesis in subjects with breast cancer and had undergone mastectomy are rare. Twenty subjects between the age of forty and sixty were recruited in the study. All subjects were diagnosed as breast cancer and planned to have mastectomy without breast reconstruction. The quality of life (QOL) and the static body balance were measured by using the Functional Assessment of Cancer Treatment Breast (FACT-B) questionnaire and the MatScan Pressure Assessment Systems (Tekscan, Inc., South Boston, MA), respectively. Most of the scores from the FACT-B scales were significant lower at seven weeks of post-operation compare with pre-operation. They included the physical well-being (p=0.011), functional well-being (p=0.009), FACT-G (p=0.012), FACT-B (p=0.006) and trial outcome index (p=0.001). The results of sway area, sway path length and maximum sway amplitude show that immediate improvement on the static body balance when subject using external breast prosthesis, especially in anteroposterior direction. They also show that decreased in stability when subject standing with eyes closed. Based on the findings, we should consider the psychological aspects of patient who suffers from breast cancer and underwent mastectomy. Rehabilitation program may necessary to improve their quality of life. On the other hand, external breast prosthesis for patient who underwent mastectomy was very important. It can improve not only the body image but also the static body balance of patient who underwent mastectomy.en_US
