dcterms.abstractMetacognition is conceptualized as an important moderator between cognition and real-world functions, and could be modifiable in individuals with schizophrenia. A cognitive training program based on a metacognitive approach may be potentially effective in improving capacity of individuals with schizophrenia in sustaining employment and community adjustment. The aim of this study is to examine the effectiveness of a standardized Metacognitive Training program (MCT), for individuals with schizophrenia who are undergoing vocational rehabilitation in the community. The effectiveness of the MCT program was investigated by a quasi-experimental study. Using convenient sampling, a total of 11 participants were recruited and randomized to receive the MCT (n = 6) plus vocational rehabilitation (VR) or VR (n = 5) only. The participants were asked to complete assessments of cognitive insight and social problem solving ability, before and after the intervention period. In addition, they were interviewed to obtain their feedback and suggestions about the MCT program. The findings suggested that metacognitive capacity of the experimental group (MCT+VR), in the area of cognitive insight (p<.05), showed significantly improvement when compared with the comparison (VR only) group. The gain in the experimental group was found to be sustained at two months follow-up test. Moreover, all participants commented that the MCT training content was substantial and appropriate, and the participants had very positive feedback about it.en_US
