dc.title | Design of an XML database architecture for structured medical data | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | Medical data possess certain unique characteristics that make it difficult to handle in conventional relational database tables. In this dissertation, XML-based database architecture for structured medical data is proposed in attempt to deal with the difficulties. The objective of the design is to allow efficient, fast and flexible storage of medical clinical data and to facilitate data analysis. A prototype system is built for the purpose of the dissertation which implements the proposed database architecture. A real-life dataset of general practitioner's clinical database was obtained with personally indefinable information removed. The dataset is transformed and imported into the prototype system for feasibility and performance evaluations. The evaluation results show that the new design has certain advantages over medical data storage using traditional, relational database, including scalability, efficiency, flexibility, and extendibility. The new design has removed the limitation in the representation of a large number of medical concepts in a typical clinical record which exist in conventional relational database designs. The performance of the XML database is satisfactory in a number of aspects when compared to relational database technologies which is very mature and optimized. The new XML-based architecture is presented to provide a useful approach for addressing key issues in medical data storage and retrieval of health information systems. | en_US |
