dcterms.abstract | A shipping network is a form of collaboration in the shipping industry where players such as carriers, intermodal service providers, container management service providers, and container terminal operators share resources and assets to develop mutually beneficial strategies and seek operational performance gains. To identify the key elements of developing shipping networks in this organizational study, we carried out a survey to collect a sample data of shipping industry in Hong Kong. This study empirically investigates to identify the four underlying factors influences the firms enter and develop the shipping networks. The results suggest that the most important shipping networks development factors are the strategic management, followed by the perceived management support, the crisis management, and the risk management. Because of the globalization and the intensified competition in the 21st century, we suggest that the firms apply the concept of agility that responding to change in proper ways and due time as well as exploiting changes and taking advantage of them as opportunities in the dynamic business environment. On the basis, we illustrate the key elements are desirable for the development and operation of horizontal and vertical shipping network to leverage their inherent resources and enhance their capabilities respectively. The results indicate that operating the vertical shipping network has a positive effect on a firm performance while operating the horizontal shipping network and firm performance was not supported in this study. In order to gain a competitive edge in the shipping networks, our research findings provide useful managerial guidelines and directions for the firms to explore their business strategies to improve the performance of shipping networks operations. Hence, the cost minimization and service maximization can be attained in the final outcome. Theoretical and practical implications of our research findings on the shipping networks development are also discussed in this study. | en_US |
