Lightning protection, earthing and bonging systems in buildingsen_US
The aim of this dissertation is to highlight the importance of electrical bonding protection in buildings. A detailed survey on earthing and bonding system, lightning protection system in different local buildings are conducted. By comparing with the relevant international standards and local regulations, the common problems and inadequacy from design and installation is identified and suggestion is given. "Early Streamer Emission" system (ESE) design becomes popular in Hong Kong. It provides a more simple, cost effective and flexible system design compare with the conventional lightning protection system design. However, the increased risk of side-flashing should be considered when applying such a system in Hong Kong. After reviewing the testing procedure on the earthing and bonding system, it is found that the procedure is usually less defined than the standard test requirement. A full set of testing is always replaced by simply visual inspection. The reliability and safety aspect of the system is much decreased. Also. the earth resistance and earth loop impendence test is missed in most of the commissioning stage. It is important to carry out proper testing and commissioning for lightning protection, earthing and bonding systems to ensure the system components are properly installed. Visual inspection together with testing and measurement is recommended to be included. All the testing record should be well maintained. When there is any damage in the lightning protection system and earthing and bonding system, no immediately danger effect will appeared. This is the main reason why the routine maintenance is usually not addressed on the both system. As a result, protection to property and occupants in the buildings is not ensured.en_US
