dcterms.abstract | The deteriorating climate change draws increasingly focus on environmental issues. Sustainable building became a hot topic since building is one of the largest energy end users. Over the past years, many studies have focused on the development of sustainable building, especial from some developed country. In order to study the barriers to sustainable building implementation in China and the incentives to promote the development of sustainable building, a research study was conducted in Shanghai by questionnaire survey distributed to building professionals. Total 52 questionnaires were collected. Over 50% of the respondents are experienced engineers, with more than ten years working experience in construction industry. However, the small percentage (13.5%) of the respondents with working experience in sustainable building project revealed that the sustainable building in China was in early stage. Principal components analysis (PCA) was performed by SPSS version 15. Six major factors of the barriers to sustainable building were extracted from the collected data. They are Limitations in current practice; Limited resource; Poor education / promotion; Cost and benefit consideration; Limited experience in sustainable building project; and Uncertainty of sustainable building. Among all, "cost and benefit consideration" ranked the first, with a mean score of 3.7, followed by "uncertainty in sustainable building" and "limited experience of sustainable building project". However, when the respondents' role in project team was considered, the rating was slightly changed. Developer regarded "limitation of current practice" as the most important whereas consultant put "cost and benefit consideration". Contractor took a different view by ranking "limited resource", "limited promotion of sustainable building", and "limited experience on sustainable building project" with similar importance. In addition to the barriers to sustainable building, the incentives were also examined in this study. The results indicated that government involment was the most important inducement for building profesioonals to consider and adopt sustainability options. | en_US |
