dc.title | Evaluation of two direct fluorescent-antibody assays for the detection of human metapneumovirus | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) has emerged as a vital etiologic agent of upper and lower respiratory tract infections in the pediatric population. Rapid detection of hMPV allows the prompt isolation and treatment of infected patients. In the present prospective study, we evaluated the performances of two rapid antigen detection assays, including two direct fluorescent-antibody assays (DFA) for hMPV manufactured by Imagen (Oxoid Ltd., Basingstock, Hampshire, United Kingdom) and Light Diagnostics (Chemicon International, Temecula, CA, U.S.A.). The clinical specimens tested were comprised of 150 nasopharyngeal aspirates submitted to the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at Princess Margaret Hospital from May 2008 to February 2009. Compared to the results of real-time reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR), the Imagen DFA had a sensitivity of 60% and a specificity of 100%. The Light Diagnostics DFA showed a sensitivity of 90% and a specificity of 100%. In conclusion, both hMPV DFAs are highly specific in comparison to the results of RT-PCR, but Imagen DFA sensitivity would await further improvement. The commercial availability of hMPV DFA reagents will be of significant benefit to clinical laboratories. | en_US |
