Abstract: | Building industry in Hong Kong creates the greatest impact to the environment. To introduce green and innovative building design is becoming an important issue for the building industry in Hong Kong. Sky garden is one of the green features mentioned in the entitled Green and Innovative Buildings JPN. As sky garden will be more common in the near future, the comfort level in the sky garden is growing concern. In this study, methods to evaluate the thermal comfort and wind comfort in sky garden is studied. Method proposed in the present study is to use CFD simulation. The wind data is obtained from the Hong Kong Observatory. The analysed data is then divided into three cases: i) summer, ii) winter and iii) days affected by tropical cyclone (TC). CFD simulation is then carried out by this analysed wind data. Besides, there are two configurations of geometry of sky garden created for simulation. After simulation, the values of average velocity and different graphs of velocity vector plots and velocity shaded contour plots are obtained from the analysed numerical solution. Finally, with the result of the CFD simulation, thermal comfort and wind comfort in the sky garden are then evaluated based on the average velocities. In summer condition, it is observed from the result that the air velocity in the case 1 sky garden is relatively higher than that of case 2. This can be explained by the more space of opening in the case 1. This observation is same as in winter condition and the day affected by typhoon. For thermal comfort, it is found that, in summer conditions, higher wind speed provided greater satisfaction of thermal comfort. In contrast, for winter condition, higher wind speed gave lower satisfaction of thermal comfort. This findings can concluded that the method proposed in this study is generally applicable to evaluate the thermal comfort and wind comfort in sky gardens. |
