Abstract: This research investigated an approach for evaluating residual stresses in fiber metal lamina (FML) during prepreg processing by measuring deformation with FBG sensors embedded in the structure. During the preparation of FML, six FBG sensors were implanted along the principle direction in the composite layer, which was prepreg of uniform carbon fiber/epoxy T300. Due to the temperature changed during heating and cooling process of FML, the wavelength in the FBG alternated distinctly as the deformation in the local area generated by mismatch of thermal coefficients of materials as well as the chemical shrinkage of the resin. The signal captured from the FBG sensors could finally be concluded for calculation of residual stresses. On the other hand, a model for simulation was applied as the numerical analysis of the composite under thermal loading to verify the results of the measurement.
