The study of applying distributed computing to LiDAR data processing in GRASS GISen_US
A Hierarchical and Distributed Grid model was developed and applied to speed up data processing of LiDAR in GRASS. This model is comprised of six objects, i.e. LiDGrid, Metadata, Site, Operation, Task and Job. These six objects were constructed hierarchically, and can be serialized and transferred in network. The characteristics of hierarchical and distributed make this model suitable to be employed in the distributed computing environment. Based on the model, a general-propose Distributed GRASS Platform for LiDAR (DGP4LiD) was also proposed. The framework applies the Master-Work pattern and includes six components which are application portal, data server, decomposition tool, task constructor, workload balancer and remote computing nodes. This platform integrated the GRASS GIS system which is one of the most advanced open source GIS toolkits. Experiments with real world datasets were conducted and the performances of generating DEM of eight regions are measured. By contrasting the results generated by GRASS and this application, it can be concluded that the model and platform introduced in this study not only reduces the complex of designing parallel application applying the modules of GRASS to solve computationally intensive problem, but also prominently improves the efficiency without affecting the accuracy.en_US
