Abstract: People concerned more about air and water pollution problems in resent years because of the adverse effects including health impacts, acid rain, urban heat island effect and others. The air and water pollution problems in Hong Kong is not only due to local sources, but also related to regional pollution source particularly Pearl River Delta. The increased air and water pollutants because of rapid urban development in both regions. For accessing the problem and controlling the emission from development, it is required to study the Air Quality Objectives, Air Pollution Index and Water Quality Objectives, Wastewater Discharge Standards between Hong Kong and Pearl River Delta. Poor air quality and the polluted water also greatly affected the residents in this two regions. In this dissertation, a comparative study on air and water pollution related to some particular industries of Hong Kong and Pearl River Delta on environment and health impact was done. Site visit to a power plant in Guangzhou and on-site measurement of a coating industry in Shenzhen were done in order to obtain the emission data. Through this project, a deep understanding about environment, health impact from air and water pollution in both Hong Kong and Pearl River Delta can be obtained. Also air and water quality standards and legislative control were studied. In Hong Kong and Pearl River Delta, the air and water quality getting worse in these years. The air pollutants mainly comes from industries and vehicles in the city while the water pollutants also mainly came from the industries. Comparing the Hong Kong Air Quality Objectives and China Ambient Air Quality Standard, China AAQS is stricter than HKAQO while the sampling principle are the same in both regions. For water quality monitoring system in Hong Kong and Pearl River Delta, the monitoring frequency in PRD is higher than that in HK. For power plants in Hong Kong and Pearl River Delta, additional equipments shall be installed to reduce the emission, such as Fuel Gas Desulphurisation System that can reduce the sulphur level for more than 90%. The TVOC level of the monitoring company in Shenzhen was higher than the indoor air quality standard in China. Furnitures in home will affect the health of people because the VOC emission from the furniture product.
