dcterms.abstract2, 4-dichlorophenol (2, 4-DCP) is a commonly used chemical especially in the manufacture of other pesticide products and pharmaceuticals. Effluents of wastewater containing 2, 4-DCP are ecological hazards and they must be properly treated before discharged into the environment. This dissertation investigated the feasibility of degradation of 2, 4-DCP using persulfate as an oxidant and zero-valent iron as a catalyst in the laboratory. The effects of main factors, including the dosage of zero-valent iron, concentration of persulfate, pH value and presence of some inorganic ions on the efficiency of 2, 4-DCP degradation were investigated and optimized. The experimental result showed that 93% of 2, 4-DCP removal were achieved at the persulfate dosage of 1 mM and iron dosage of 0.025 g/L, with initial concentration of 2, 4-DCP solution at 20 mg/L (0.12 mM) within 3 hours. The experimental results also revealed that persulfate can promote the 2, 4-DCP degradation but excess amount of persulfate can limit the reaction and persulfate alone resulted in little removal of 2, 4-DCP; in acid condition, the removal efficiency increased with the increase of pH and the optimum removal was achieved at pH 6; it can also be found that the presence of anions could inhibit the degradation of 2, 4-DCP and their inhibiting effects can be ranked from low to high in an order of NO₃⁻ < C₁⁻ < C₂O₄²⁻ < H₂PO₄⁻ < HCO₃⁻ < CO₃²⁻.en_US
