Novel approaches for visible-light-induced photocatalysts : development, synthesis, characterization, and activitiesen_US
In view of increasingly serious energy and environmental problems, applications of environmentally harmonious photocatalysts are urgently desired for the purification of polluted water, the decomposition of offensive atmospheric odors as well as toxins, and the decomposition of NOₓ and chlorofluorocarbons on a huge global scale. Of the materials being developed for photocatalytic applications, titanium dioxide (TiO₂) remains the most promising because of its relatively high reactivity, low-toxicity and chemical stability. Although TiO₂ has proven to be the most excellent photocatalyst for the oxidative decomposition of many compounds, its relatively wide band gap (Eg ~3.2 eV, excited only by UV light) limits its further application in the visible light region (400 nm <λ< 750 nm), which accounts for 43% of the incoming solar energy. Secondly, a low rate of electron transfer to oxygen and a high rate of recombination on pure TiO₂ surface between excited electron-hole pairs result in a low quantum yield rate and also a limited photo-oxidation rate. Thus, it is appealing to develop high efficient visible light photocatalysts active enough for practical application. This report will be included two set of new catalysts, TiO₂-graphene composites and TiO₂-SiO₂ composites, which are responsive under solar light and visible light.en_US
